my favorite things

The weather has finally cooled off here a little in Texas. It’s now down to the 60s. And I have to laugh about that because yesterday, in the girls’ music class, a mom brought her son in and immediately said, “daddy dressed him today, so please don’t think I would send my kid out in shorts and a tee-shirt in this freezing weather!” Freezing weather? It was 63 degrees! In Chicago, where I grew up, when it hit 55 degrees, kids went to school in shorts and tee-shirts. I’m not kidding! (But who am I to judge? I myself was in a cashmere turtleneck sweater. I’d say it’s official: I am a Texan. It’s a very, very short season that we get to wear warm woolens.)

Anyway, the first tell-tale sign of autumn for me is the itchy legs. You know that awful itch you get when the skin on your shins becomes too dry? It keeps me up at night and I have to admit that on occasion I’ve been known to use a boar bristle hairbrush to get rid of that itch. I’m not proud of that, but it’s the truth.

So it’s with great delight that I announce that I have been able to bring out my coveted bottle of Kiehl’s Creme de Corps from underneath the sink. Pricey, yes, but honestly, the world’s most perfect cold-weather moisturizer. A little goes a very long way and it lasts forever. I’m still using last winter’s bottle.

Oh, and my legs? They’re not itchy anymore. But my face? Tight. Time to find the perfect cold-weather facial moisturizer. That’s a tough one. I’ll get back to you…

Oooh, I’d never thought of using the brush on that itch! The Kiehl’s lotion sounds a bit more luxurious, though…

I get the same thing this time of year on my legs, arms and face. My “T-zone” is usually dry all year but much worse in the winter. I like aveeno but sometimes it makes me too oily, I haven’t found that perfect one yet so I’ll have to try whatever you find…as long as I won’t need a bank loan.
