getting back in the saddle

This week has been brutal. And it’s only Wednesday.

Pea is healthy. The rest of us? Down for the count.

My husband came home from Connecticut with an ear infection and a sinus infection. He was met at the front door by his wife, who also had a sinus infection. And then, he was handed his youngest baby girl, Coco, who also had an ear infection. And a nasty cold. And the real kicker? WE ALL HAVE STINKING PINK EYE.

Seriously! Could it get any nastier than that?

When one of us was burning up with fever and turning the air conditioning on, another was freezing from a peaked fever and was trying to turn the heat on. It was most definitely a comedy of errors.

Honestly! Is this fair?

Is this what happens when you have small kids? You spend most of your time either fighting getting sick or coming down with something or getting better from something? Because that’s what it feels like. I have been sick more times in the last year than in all of the past 10 years combined, I’m pretty sure. And my poor husband? My God, he is a lousy patient. He complains. And whines. Kind of a lot. And I do like to take care of him. But not when I’m also taking care of a baby, and presumably myself. That is hard work.

I fondly remember the days when I would come down with something, curl up in bed with a piping hot cup of tea on my bedside table and a bunch of supermarket gossip rags and just not get out of bed until I was better. And I might even throw in an extra day of bed rest. Just for good measure.

Ah, those days are sooo long gone.

Thankfully, everyone is feeling much better today. Lots of antibiotics and decongestants (and please, I read the papers, so don’t feel the need to tell me how we should not be using decongestants on our baby, these meds are prescribed by my daughter’s pediatrician… and I am not an idiot. I know how to dose my child properly, thank you very much…) and eye drops and ear drops. Oh my! I’m just glad things are starting to look up for us. Just in time for the weekend…

Sorry, Melissa… that would be my fault… I typed it in wrong, it’s http://www.steady-as-we-go.blogspot.com, I’m excited to have a new reader!

    Sarah,

I can’t ever get the link to your blog to let me in. Is your blog private? Or is it me? (I hope it’s not me…)

I’m glad y’all are feeling better… I know what you mean though, I teach 2nd grade so I’m usually the one trying to dodge all the germs, but there’s no dodging your own child, who at this very moment is totally struck with cough and congestion. Which reminds me I need to call my nanny and make sure she knows exactly how much of the pediacare to give him!

Ugh. What a week! Nothing worse than having the whole family go down for the count at the same time. Isn’t it interesting that somehow Mommy can manage to still take care of everyone else, even though she’s just as sick? Men turn into such babies when they’re ill.

I long for the days when I could “take to my bed” when I was sick. The only time I’ve been able to do that in the three years since my daughter was born was when I had food poisoning so badly that I couldn’t *get* out of the bed. And even then my husband brought my daughter to me every 4 hours or so to breastfeed. *sigh*

    Hey Melissa-

I’m sorry you guys are going through a sick bout! And yes, it’s the way it happens…sadly enough. Kendall started 2 days a week of preschool this year and the teacher said ‘don’t be surprised if they have a runny nose all winter long!’. I almost died. But that’s the way it goes. I keep my cabinets stocked with the appropriate meds for them and us at all times. And nice comment about the correct dosage…cause you KNOW that people who don’t have anything better to do with their time than criticize would be chiming in with their unnecessary 2cents regarding the issue.

Sigh…I, too, miss the days of just being in bed – alone – watching movies or whatever just being sick. I keep telling my husband that I need to have a talk with my union rep about the lack of sick days that us Mommies get!

    Thanks for always sharing.

    Have a nice night!
