I wear a uniform. Don’t most mothers? I think so. Mine consists, generally, of well-cut jeans (an all-important investment, in my opinion), a tank with a hoodie over it and cool sneakers. I then “chic” it up with accessories. A great watch. Cool earrings. An incredible bag. And this works. I’m running around, on my feet most of the day, and often covered in applesauce, crayon and spit-up. Fancy is not going to cut it. I’m just not that woman who is going to wear stilettos underneath her jeans. It’s a great look, yes. But not for me. My goal as far as my own personal style is to make comfy look elegant. I stick to what I know works on me. I look good in neutral earth tones, so my closet consists of a lot of olive green and variations of brown. My two favorite colors. And the beauty of this is that no matter what I pull out of my closet, I’m always going to be well-coordinated.
Now the real trick is to find sneakers (is that what you call them? Because my husband calls them tennis shoes and where I grew up in the midwest, they are called gym shoes…) that look sharp. Years ago, I was into the Nike Air Rift shoe. But it only came in men’s sizes which meant that the color choice was not all that exciting. I bought them anyway and they were cool. Then somewhere between NY and Texas, they were misplaced. We’ve moved a lot, and it seems with each move, a very important box went missing. On one of those moves, it was my box of shoes. A real bummer for any woman.
Anyway, I never really see anyone wearing this particular shoe, so I assumed because they were kind of odd looking that Nike stopped making them. But I assumed wrong. I stumbled upon them at Nordstrom’s on-line site. And now, they are in women’s sizes, which means they are also in women’s colors. Of course, I became all nostalgic and had to order a pair. I’m so glad I did. The price is right. They are super-comfortable and look fantastic. I ordered them in gold. Pretty chic for a sneaker…

I love this post! It’s time for me to do a closet purge and adopt your “uniform.” The items you names are the things I love to wear. Why struggle trying to fill my closet with dressy pants and outfits that I never wear and don’t feel comfortable in? Much smarter to invest in feeling good in the stuff I wear everyday. I just need to work on getting some cool accessories and shoes. Thanks for this post!
Hey Angela –
You should be able to click on “Nike Air Rift shoe” in the post and it will take you directly to the page. Let me know if that doesn’t work and I will send you the URL.
Good luck!
Just stumbled upon your site.. I LIVE in the midwest where I’m not finding cool sneakers at all. Do you have a URL for the gold ones?
I’m from the Midwest too! (Ohio) And I grew up calling them gym shoes.
I wonder why they’re called that?
i am a total sneaker slut. i love Mihara Yasuhiro … he does a few designs a year and you can only get them at Barneys, etc… but they show up on ebay! i have awesome pony ones and cool white boots.

I wear Paige Premium Denim jeans like it’s my religion. She was actually the fit model for all the major designer brands (including 7s) and so really knows how to fit a woman’s body. She’s also tall, like you, and her measurements are realistic. But the jeans are also ridiculously expensive, and so I shop around for them to go on sale and then buy them. You can check out shopbop.com and also activeendeavors.com. I’ve bought from both of those shops at a deep discount.
And my other suggestion for designer jeans is bluefly.com. They sell them all there – including the occasional pair of 7s. Also at a deep discount.
And my last suggestion is to check out J Crew. They are always really current with the trends and the jeans are high quality and look good and won’t break the bank. I’ve always had great luck there.
Your “uniform” sounds a lot like mine. But please tell, what brand jeans do you wear? I have the hardest time finding ones I love. I am tall (5′10″). I am always eager to hear people’s opinion on great fitting jeans. I just hope you don’t tell me 7’s. As much as I would love to try them, I can’t imagine how I could justify that cost to my husband, even if I wore them every single day.
I will have check out those sneakers too! Thanks!
LOVE Royal Elastics – very cool tennis shoes. But a girl can never have too many shoes…
OK – You’re really not going to believe this, but I SWEAR it’s true. Those “Air Rift” shoes – I have been searching for them for about 3 years, off and on. I saw Jennifer Aniston wearing them in an US Magazine or something, and thought they were super cute, but I never knew what they were so I would google “tennis shoes with velcro strap.” You can imagine the horrors that the google search retrieved.
You are my Air Rift angel!! I might have to copy you and order the gold, too, but I recently got these - and they’re pretty similar. What do you thinK?
