the first supper

This evening, I cooked our first official meal in our new home. My spice collection has been MIA, which was a concern because a good number of my spices come from a specialty spice store called The Spice House, outside of Chicago, where I grew up. It would have cost a small fortune to replace them all at once. But more importantly, we’ve been living on take-out since we arrived, one week ago today, and my family was just itching for some delicious and healthy meals. Anyway, my precious spice collection turned up in a box marked “knick knacks.” Trust me, there were no knick knacks in the box to speak of. Way to go, movers.
In honor of the snow and the colder climate, it seemed only fitting that we eat chili and cornbread. So that’s what I made. And since I still haven’t found all of my cookbooks, I had to do some searching on the Internet for a recipe that looked like it would work. Internet recipes have been pretty hit or miss for me, mostly miss.
But I found a winner on The Food Network website that’s from a lady golfer, adapted by a Canyon Ranch chef, and since I adore my Canyon Ranch cookbook, I just knew the recipe was going to be good. And it was. It was really good.

Your move reminds me of mine 5 years ago…back to Canada from Australia…back to the snow! And misplaced spices! hahaha Lots of memories.

    Robyn,

I’m not eating red meat or pork, but I am having a little poultry here and there. And some fish, too. It was a turkey chili that I made, and I’m glad to say that my carnivore husband loved it!

MMMMmmm — I make chili a lot, but have never attempted the cornbread part. Does this mean you’re eating meat again? I’m still off meat, and have been making meatless chili (not quite the same as regular). Word to the wise, when using a ground beef substitute (as I did this weekend in my bolognese sauce), stay away from Gimme Lean (the texture is weird and the seasonings are strong).

Sounds like you’re starting to make your new house a home!!

Yum!! Chili and cornbread… I think I will make that for our dinner tonight! :) Glad you found the spices. Yup, those movers come up with interesting descriptions, don’t they?

There is certainly something about cooking that makes everything more homey, snuggly and real. My dad has given us Spice House spices for Christmas that he brings back from WI for a few years now. He really is not the kind of dad that picks out the exact right present that he knows we will like, but we have really, really enjoyed the spices.
