more tissues, please

In a continuation of Sunday’s weepy post, I am still feeling a little melancholy over my little baby not being my little baby any longer. Technically, she’s not walking, so I can still call her a baby, right? I mean, she’s not officially a toddler until she can, well, toddle, right? Okay, good. I thought so.

Coco had her one year check-up yesterday with her new pediatrician, whom I adore. I knew she had me when she told me she was a transplanted “salty” New Englander (is there any other kind?) and that her family was very Katharine Hepburn-esque. I adore Katharine Hepburn. She is my idol. My husband used to drive me around her old Connecticut neighborhood in the hopes that I’d bump into her at her favorite ice cream spot. You know, the couple who stalks together stays together… But the doctor and me? We totally clicked, spent way too much time talking about social matters and perhaps not enough time talking about medical ones. Just kidding, we did cover everything, because as usual, I came prepared for our appointment with a notebook filled with jotted down thoughts and questions. I’m kind of a nerd like that. It’s that whole obsession I have with lists.

Coco is in the 60th percentile for height, perfectly respectable, although maybe not as impressive as her big sister’s 95th percentile for height. But her weight? She is in the 3rd percentile. She actually weighed about 2.5 ounces less than she did at her nine month check-up, but the doctor thinks maybe she lost a few ounces from this nasty little stomach bug the girls have been fighting all week. The doctor isn’t concerned, particularly when I told her that I was the World’s Skinniest Kid. As a baby? I was in the 5th percentile for weight. So little Coco? She takes after her mama. Finally. A kid that takes after me. Because Pea? She is clearly her father’s daughter. Tall and solid. Oh, and those gorgeous blue eyes. Those definitely came from her daddy.

Needless to say, we didn’t get any shots yesterday. We have to go back in six weeks for a follow-up to check her weight and she’ll receive her twelve month vaccinations then. But we have six weeks to, as the doctor said, “calorie pack.” Lots of butter. And whole milk. Sounds like a yummy diet to me…

Look, it’s Coco doing her impersonation of Katherine Hepburn! See how she has her collar turned up, remember how Katherine was always so fond of those turtlenecks? Note the over the shoulder brooding stare into space, she must be thinking of Spenser Tracey!

Coco, you oughta be in pictures!

    Hi Melissa!!

I’ve missed you all!! I’m finally on the mend from the flu. I’m catching up with my reading and I totally understand what you’re going through. Ty turned 2 on the 8th and he’s so much a boy now and not my little baby. But he was in the 50th for height and only the 18th for weight. So we have to go back in a few months for review as well. It shocked me because Kendall is like Pea in that she’s in the 98th for height and something like the 50th for weight. So I immediately thought something was wrong when his numbers weren’t nearly as impressive. Our pedi has him on 1/2 of a chewable vitamin daily just to supplement anything he *may* be missing in his diet.

I’m so glad you found a pedi so quickly! That makes life with kids so much easier.

I hope you’re doing well and we’ll chat soon!!

    HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY COCO!!

    xoxo

Your little girl is so very beautiful and distinguished looking Melissa. I love the upturned collar. How nice that you love your pediatrician. The relief that finding one whom you can like so much is indescribable.

    Hi,
Just had to share. I am sitting here reading your blog & my daughter, who is also one, wandered up. She loves looking at pics, so I said, “That is Coco.” Now she is busy saying “Coco” and pointing at all the pics. She is very social & loves interacting. Just thought it was cute.

Anyway, I know what you mean. When Bean started walking I thought I lost my baby, but I make sure to tell her all the time that she will be forever my “Baby Girl.” I still make sure to get snuggle time in before she goes to bed. I love those precious moments.

I am totally a list/jot notes down at doctors appointments nerd too…
