confessing

I have a confession to make. I haven’t always worn fabulous shoes. I went through a phase in my life where I lived in a pair of black Dansko clogs. They were (and still are, I’m sure) the most comfortable shoe ever created. I mean that.

It seemed to take me an exceptionally long time to “find myself.” You know how most kids are “finding themselves” in their early to mid-twenties? Well, I was a late bloomer. In my mid-twenties, I was successful at what I was doing. I lived in a gorgeous pre-war apartment on Christopher Street in the West Village. I had just been hired at VH1 as a Unit Manager for some silly shows about washed-up rock-stars and one hit wonders. (Remember “Where Are They Now?” And “Before They Were Rock-Stars?” Yes, those were my shows. It was another lifetime ago.) I was making a lot of money for a kid my age, had a lot of responsibility and was traveling constantly. It seemed glamorous in the beginning, I wore fabulous clothes, but I was really known for my shoe collection. It was enormous and my pride and joy. I guess I’ve always kind of been a shoe girl.

But I burned out quickly, ran away to Iowa (don’t ask) and hung out with my dog. After about a year, I made my way back to New York, to move in with my then-boyfriend (and now-husband) who, during all of my flighty searching my soul-ness, was very patient with me. He lived in a sweet little cottage in Westchester County and although we weren’t married at the time, we acted as if we were. He basically supported me while I was still busy trying on new hats. I went to work at an antique store in Bedford that was owned by my mother’s college roommate’s sister-in-law. I spent most of my time reading books in the back office because, well, the store was a bit pricy, even for that neck of the woods, and so there wasn’t much foot traffic. It was the kind of store you went into if you knew what you were looking for. Or had your designer with you. And if you can believe it, I was actually swiped from her store by another shop owner just a ways down the very same street! She heard about me from her hairdresser. How all those ends matched up, I still don’t know to this day. But she found me, paid me more money and had a wildly successful business. If I had thought it was going to be another easy job I was so very wrong. This woman was a former set designer and she meant business. She would take me on weekend buying trips and she expected me to know things. It was challenging and exciting and… exhausting. And that is about the time I discovered my beloved Dansko clogs. I wore those things to work every day, and eventually you could not get them off of me.

And then, one day, my fabulous mother flew into town and I met her and my equally fabulous brother (the shoe designer, I might add) in NYC for dinner at a swanky restaurant and 1) my mother looked down at my feet and said, “who are you, Frankenstein’s little sister?” And 2) my brother quipped, with a nasty little lip curl, “unh-unh. Not at my table…”

I never wore those shoes again. I’m constantly thinking of buying a new pair, but I just can’t bring myself to do it. Their disdain for my comfy little clogs hit a nerve.

But today? I got a new pair of “comfort” shoes. They are by Keen, who, if you don’t know, make the most awesome “active” shoes around. They are a sporty take on the omnipresent ballerina flat in a neutral brown color. Not bad to look at, reasonably priced and so awesome on the feet. I am in love with my new shoes. I won’t take them off. I even wore them in Pea’s bed to read her bedtime stories.

Best of all? I don’t think my fabulous mother or equally fabulous brother can say anything negative about these little shoes…

I have heard from some individuals that absolutely love Dansko clogs….I have not tried a pair but I must say I love love love the brand of shoe called Merrill’s….They are heaven on earth! So comfortable that I no longer go barefoot immediately when I get home from work…in fact I prefer to wear them over being barefoot….So does that say anything? Awesomely awesomely made shoe…and NO, I do not work for Merrill…but simply love their shoes enough to write a post about them! Check them out!

Oh girl-you get me into so much trouble! First off, this is what really made me fall in love with your blog to begin with-the Nike’s you posted way back got me so excited. I went into Nordstrom’s with my 2 year old-walked straight up to the gal, and said just this-see this granola bar, I am going to give this to my little guy and I literally have that much time while he devours this, to purchase my new shoes:) I went on to explain that I am looking for Nike sandals-and that sweet little gal went running and brought back the exact shoe you posted in many different colors. It was the funniest shopping experience ever. Awe, now I need to check out the Keen situation

I’ve yet to purchase Dansko shoes but have wanted a pair for a long time. Yeah, I’m old and boring with a bad back. Blah Blah. I heard they are very good for support when your back is going out on you. Those keen shoes look mighty fine too. Might just have to try them on for size.

Awww… you really shouldn’t have done that! I went to Zappos and did a search on Keen, now I think I’m gonna have to go get a 3rd mortgage… Love those shoes, love every style, shape & color! I’m so gonna get a cute pair of active shoes – thanks, Melissa!

I am so conservative when it comes to shoes. I’m short, so I always feel like I should be in heels, but I’m not eager to break my neck while running from far-away parking lots to the courthouse.

I’m so jealous of my boss and her TO DIE FOR fabulous shoe collection, but I just can’t bring myself to spend that kind of money on uncomfortable, yet faboo, shoes. Good find with the Keens — you may have a following…!

Well, before I came to post, I went ahead and ordered a pair. So cute! I even ordered the same color… so if you come visit, we’ll have to figure something out.

I recently STOPPED living in my Danskos and have no idea what to wear, so this is timely! Really, I should pay you to be my personal shopper…

Today the sun was out  … I’m sooo done with my Franco Sarto boots but it’s still too chilly for my fabulous sandals. I quite reluctantly  put on my tennis shoes (WISHED I had a pair of ‘active shoes’) and headed to the park with the kids.

Honestly I have no idea which active shoes are fabulous for this forty something gal…. I’m still wanting to look somewhat hip but not wanting to look silly either. BUT, I do know the white walkin’ shoes have GOT to GO….. not a good look for this curvy mama.

I have been waiting for a full month (because of my no buy March) to buy what I think are the same pair of shoes. I ordered them online today and can’t wait to get them!

Can’t wait to see Nona’s comment on this post…

OOHHH – I love my Keens and wish I could wear them with my new Little Black Dress… Maybe you can recommend some new black strappy heels to go along with my new purchase?

Very fun post! I enjoyed reading about your past and I totally remember those shows…Where Are They Now etc. etc. They weren’t on that long ago…Were they?? How time goes by!

Love the Keens, but I have a confession too – I still love Danskos. :) Always will.

I LOVE Keens! I bought two pairs of them for my 5 year-old (summer sandals and winter pull-ons) and they are WONDERFUL for kids. The big rubber soles don’t give out when he drags his feet on his scooter.

I have a pair of the sandals for summer and live in them. I may have to invest in the ballerina flats as they are super cute!

    Hey Mama Bird!

I guess I did live down the street from you? I was at One Christopher.

I put in a link to my new shoes at the bottom of the post. I think it’s working…

And I hear you about shoes vs. mortgage. I certainly don’t shop like I used to!

First of all, you use to live on Christopher street… like a few blocks down from me?!

Second of all, I would really like to see a photo of these new shoes. Any chance?

Finally, funny post. I like shoes but I don’t buy a ton of them anymore. Something about a mortgage.
