Pea called horses “hee-haws” for the longest time. We thought maybe she got it from “yee-haw,” which would make a lot of sense, right? Cowboys ride horses and say things like “yee-haw!” But… it’s not like we walk around yelling out “yee-haw!” We’re just not those kind of people. Even if we did live in Texas. Land of the Cowboy.
But it was cute, nonetheless. She loves horses. Got that from her mama. I love horses. I really, really love horses. I’m like a kid, passing by a ranch. If there are horses out, you will see us driving by, my husband at the wheel, my girls strapped into their car-seats in back, and me, in the front passenger seat, my nose and hands pressed up again the window. A look of awe on my face.
We have lots of books in the house on horses. They don’t have words, just gorgeous photos that will make your heart race. Even if you don’t love horses. The creatures, for me, are magical and mystical and powerful and just all-around awe-inspiring. And now Pea feels that way, too.
When I ordered this book by Michael Eastman, I was hoping for more of the same. Lush photos of horses in their natural habitat. I was not disappointed.
Neither is Pea.

I catch her on the couch, lying on her stomach, the book open in front of her. She’s staring at the pages. “Look at this one! No, look at this one! Mommy! Look! Look at this horsey!”
That’s right, she no longer calls horses “hee-haws.” They’ve been elevated to “horseys.” But she is still captivated…

My mother says I used to call horses perrones (big dogs in Spanish) for the longest time. My son, like Pea calls them he, he, he, hes and then he finishes it off with something that resembles a snort. You can interpret that as the sound of neighing. I’d never seen a child so quick to comply as when he waited for half and hour a few months back to just ride a pony. This love of animals that children have is innate and mostly untainted by fear. I wish I were a horsey person myself. Perhaps I should do as you do with Pea. This photo of her with the book and those marvelous pictures enraptures even me. Loved this post.
Oh! One more comment on cute things kids say…my littlest brother used to call Winnie the Pooh “pear boo”. It was SUPER cute, and we were all so bummed out the day he suddenly started calling him “pooh bear”. Though since then he’s learned that we think it’s cute, so every once in a while he’ll still call him pear boo.
Oh beautiful! I love horses too…there is just something so wonderful about them. I don’t get to ride hardly ever (nothing short of a tragedy I assure you), but even being around them just fills my heart and lifts my spirit.
How wonderful for you to both have such a special common interest!
that photo is gorgeous!
my daughter called watches, “tick tocks” for the longet time and we just couldn’t correct her because it was so freakin’ cute.
What a joy to see a child reading a book, instead of watching yet another nutty cartoon on tv!
I love the photo of Pea, so sweet. I so agree about horses they are magical. Even though I live in the city I’ve always wanted to own horse stables. One of my dreams is to own a place in Kentucky where it’s lush and green and there are horses galore. I just need to find the $$ some where to do this and hire people to care for them as I don’t know one thing about caring for a hourse. Wouldn’t that be fun!
Such a sweet photo…
