Not that long ago, Krista, from Organize in Style, asked me if I would write a guest post on her site about my family’s move from Texas to Utah. I jumped at the chance. I thought, hey, I’ve moved a lot. I know stuff. I can share my wisdom and insight. And then, as I sat at my computer, it occurred to me that even after several cross-country moves and lots of smaller moves sprinkled in between, there are still things that I wish I’d done differently. For the most part, our move went off without a hitch. Except, of course, for my missing pink iPod that my husband had inscribed with a little love note for me a few years ago. I’m still sad about that loss. But all in all, it was a good move. Although I am very glad it’s over.
We have remaining about a million book boxes to unpack (take note of Krista’s post on organizing collections of books), but we’re putting that off for a little while. There are still things that we want to get done in the house, like replacing carpet with hardwoods and painting, which is all on the schedule for this spring. But we are now mostly settled in, and it feels like home. At night, after reading Pea her bedtime stories and right before I turn off her bedside lamp, she still takes one last look out of her window and says to me, “mama, it is boo-tee-ful here. It is a boo-tee-ful view.”
Ahh… home, sweet home.
Anyway, check out Krista’s site because, from one organized woman to another, she has wonderfully chic ideas on how to help you make life more stylishly organized. I, for one, like the sound of that!

I’m so organized that I even brought my trash can via cargo ship with starter trash inside. We nearly fainted from the stench after two months of everything decomposing inside. Considering the number of times I’ve moved also, one would think I’d learned a trick or two. That is SO not the case. You put me to shame.
organization makes my heart sing! i just love it.
You mean that there are better ways then the toss it all in a box and sort it out when you get there method? There are few things on this planet that I dislike more than moving.
Great post melissa!! I couldn’t live without the kitchen starter box!! I never think about all the little things you learn when you move a lot! Fabulous information… I’m glad you’ve landed safely in your new home!
Hi Melissa,
I did hop over to Krista’s site to read your guest post…you are so talented and organized! I can’t imagine how you managed the move with two little ones and a husband who travels. Your suggestions were terrific, my two favorites are: 1) kitchen starter box, and 2) get the movers to pack those boxes! Isn’t it amazing how we underestimate the amount of stuff we have to pack! Or how many boxes it takes up once it’s actually packed?!

P.S. do you still have snow on the ground?
