I have a problem. Well, an addiction, actually. To lip stuff. Balm, gloss. It’s serious. Seriously expensive. And it has to stop.
Periodically, I go through my make-up drawers and weed through the immense collection of lip products I’ve bought, in order to simplify my life. I send at least one dozen tubes, jars and sticks of the stuff, at a time, to my sister. This stuff has been barely used. And for my sister? The cash-strapped grad student? It’s a gold mine. A veritable feast.
For me? It’s a waste. Because while I am always on the search for that perfect product, the one that’s going to change my life, I haven’t found it yet. And while I realize that perhaps I am asking too much of my lip product, come on. What other product out there, so small and simple, holds so much promise, other than a new pot of shiny lip gloss? I’ve been looking for decades for my perfect shade. The perfect consistency. And you know what? It’s just not out there. So it’s time to stop. Stop the madness. I’ve made a pledge to myself. No more lip products. At least not the exclusive stuff you get at the department stores. Because it is insane to spend $30 on a tube of Chanel lipgloss when I know – I know – that in one month? Or a week? Or a day? Or the car ride home? I’m going to decide it’s not me, after all. And then promptly put it in the huge pile to send to my little sister.
In the end? It turns out I’m a simple girl. And it was a tube of Burt’s Bees gloss in Pucker Berry that convinced me of this. It’s not tacky, like a gloss normally is. It has a very faint but pleasant taste, it’s all-natural, and the color is subtly shiny. It’s not glittery or shimmery. It enhances my lips just enough so that I have that healthy look that I’m always striving for. And it was under $10. Well under $10. So when I get bored with it? No regrets…

I can understand your vice. I have one, too. Mine’s not lip gloss, it’s hand cream. I have terribly dry hands, with a touch of eczema, and I am forever looking for a good hand cream. I think I’ve tried nearly everything on the market. Most of them only get half-used before I’m on to something else. I have half-empty tubes of various kinds in my vanity, my bedside table, my purse, my diaper bag, the car… etc. Seems like such a waste sometimes.
Oh, and none of them work. My hands are still a mess. Go figure.
Melissa, I need your sage advice. I’ve actually set a date for the mountain living test run and need suggestions. I’ve outlined it all in a post today, so please stop by my blog and give me your opinion!
Thank you!!!!!!

I highly recommend Burt’s Bees & all their products. That has been my primary source. It also has an incredible line of children’s products. One of my favorite things to give at showers or new baby gifts is Burt’s Bees Starter Kit for Baby. I love their all natural products. Enjoy!
Oh, I have to add. I received my Puella grab bag for my daughter yesterday. I love it!! Everything in there is so incredibly soft & beautiful. Thank you so, so much for the recommendation. Now that I have seen it for myself I will be recommending it to my friends.
I used to live in Boulder, Co. The blue ‘pot’ of medex by blistex is the only thing that saved my life…lips. It was so dry my lips ached constantly. Also it smelled a little like summer…a much needed boost in the freezing cold! I still get compliments when I wear it…it just looks like the perfect gloss.
I am also a lip gloss addict…..my drug of choice are those little pots of Carmex, which I’ve used for years and have at least four floating around in the house and car and office at all times.
I’ll have to try Burt’s Bee’s, I like the idea of beeswax, sounds so natural!

We should institute a swap you and I. I’ll send you all my barely used lip glosses and you send me yours. Still, I think we’d be sending each other the same thing. For some reason, I apparently follow your footsteps on the lipgloss loves.
I love Burt’s Bees. I’m not addicted to BUYING lipgloss/chapstick/etc, but I’m most definitely addicted to USING it. I cannot stand if my lips feel dry. It drives me nuts and distracts me, it really becomes my only point of focus until I get something to make them soft and not dry anymore. Burt’s Bees is definitely the best I think.
I’m in your lipgloss boat. I’ll stop if you do …
And I’m here – I’ve just been busy, and away from my computer a lot. I’ll email soon.
I have the same stuff in another shade and LOVE it! Good choice!
PS did you get your Puella Petite stuff yet? We got ours last week and I am so pleased. Cute stuff! I went a size up based on your rec. and so glad I did, the clothes are just slightly too big for P so she can wear them through the fall (maybe even warm winter days!). Thanks!
