And I don’t mean family planning in the way that you might think that I mean family planning. No, we are not having another kid. I’m talking about keeping the schedules of the kids that we already have in order, along with my husband’s insane travel and work schedule. And the dogs having to go to the vet and the groomer on what would seem to be a weekly basis.
I use a Mom Agenda. And I love it. It has a spot for everything, and being quite the traditionalist, I’m all about paper and a pencil. (I never use pen in my planners because I’m fickle and constantly changing things around and cannot stand it when things are not neat and tidy.) My husband? He keeps all of this information on his computer, in Outlook. And in a perfect world, I would check it daily and update my own planner. But that rarely happens. And so while I try to stay on top of his whereabouts, you can often hear me saying, “What do you mean you’re leaving tomorrow morning for Hamburg? We have plans! Why didn’t you tell me this?” It really annoys him, I can totally understand that.
I’m looking for something that’s going to get us all in sync but it has to fit a pretty tall list of requirements. Among those, I want to be able to access it from anywhere. My husband’s PC, the Mac in the kitchen, the Mac in my little home office, my iPhone, my husband’s Blackberry.
Right now, I’m trying out a family planner on-line. It’s free. Free! It’s called Cozi, and it’s from some of those really smart guys who left Microsoft to do their own thing. Thus far, I’m feeling pretty good about it. You don’t have to download any software onto your computer to use it, you just go to the website and log in. I bookmarked my home page right on my bookmark toolbar, so it’s just right there. I can keep a schedule for everyone in the house on it. Including our two dogs and two cats. And there’s a shopping list to update (because I hate nothing more than when I return from the grocery store and my husband asks where the diet tonic water is and I respond that I had no idea we needed any and he gets a little pouty and then I have to remind him that if he wants something from the grocery store, write it on the list! Please!
You can also send notes to one another on it, you can invite other family members to have access. And there are other features, as well, such as a family journal (which I won’t use, I keep a separate password-protected one elsewhere), but the calendar is the most important aspect for me. The only complaint I have thus far is that while it’s compatible with my Mac, some of the features are only available when you’re using it on a PC. Not a big deal, I think I’m getting the benefits I’m looking for. Even on my Mac.
Now I just have to ask my husband to sign on and get into it. And you know that saying about the old dog and the new tricks? Well… I’m not saying he’s an old dog, but he kind of is. He likes his already-in-place systems and while he’s also into new and improved, I think he’d be most content if I came around to his way. You know, going into his office, signing onto his computer, looking up his calendar and then manually entering it into my own planner with my little pencil. No thanks, my To Do list is overflowing as it is…
Stay tuned…

I’m with you on using a paper planner. I use Outlook for my appointments and contacts as it ties into my co-workers; however, I’ve found task management and goal setting to be much easier using paper.
LOVE this idea! I use Outlook at work but being home this summer I was beginning to wonder what I was going to use as my catch all for all of our events and activities! I am going to check this out today! Thanks for the tip
Moleskines are divine!
However with my beloved being a tech ruled type of a guy, Google Calendars works wonderful for this crew.
Soon our favorite son will be leaving us for college. In true OCD mom fashion, i’ve already created a shared calendar for us to track …er i mean keep up with him. I do wonder if he’ll update it to include appointments such as “FRAT PARTY”, or “CRAM STUDY SESSION due to hanging out all night at Frat Party”
I like a lot of high tech things but when it comes to my schedule (and my family’s schedule) I’m still an old fashioned pen and pencil girl. Sometimes pen if I’m feeling extra edgy.
I just saw a link to the site on facebook! Exciting!
I’m a lover of the paper list and organizer too. But, I guess I’m a rebel, ‘cuz I do mine in pen! Hee hee.
Thanks for the link to the Mom Agenda – looks like a really great book. I like the idea of Cozi, too, but I’m not sure if it would work in my house. Maybe I’ll give it a try…
I love my Google calendar. I do have my paper planner, but I find myself using my Google calendar more frequently because I can access it from anywhere and my friends have access to it. I can also see my friends’ schedules and how ours mesh together.
Maybe Cosi doesn’t work so well on the Mac because it was started by Microsoft folks
. Agreed with @Chelsea about google groups. It’s a bear to use. Took more effort to use than get the benefit out of it. I found Qlubb to be really easy to use although it’s not targeted specifically for families. It doesn’t have much customization but who has time for customizing anyway.
Hopefully google will get this right at some point. Thanks for Mom Agenda. Never knew it existed – will check it out.
We don’t have scheduling issues, but I love Cozi’s shopping list feature. I can just send it to my phone! Thanks for the recommendation.
I write everything into my little moleskin. Tried all the fandangly stuff like synching our calendar phones and our computer calendars but what keeps working every single time better than anything else is to just sit down five minutes every night and run through the mutual lists. It’s all about the lists isn’t it? I’ll look up cozy anyway. If only for the name which I think too cute for words. Thanks for the tip.
I was gonna mention Google Calendar too. My husband thought it was so great at first, but we kind of phased out of it, mostly because I didn’t really get into it. I would put stuff on there but not look at it and was still using my write-able planner. We don’t have internet-accessing phones so maybe that was also a problem. But it sounds like something that could work for you, if the Cozi thing doesn’t work out.
I tried cozy, it’s cute… but I do the icalendar on my mac combined with my MomAgenda.
We have the same problem in my house! What I started doing (b/c we have Macs at home, but PCs in the office and blackberries) is using Google’s free calendar. It is accessible from iphone and blackberry and will automatically put the item on the blackberry calendar when you “invite” other people to your event.
In the last 6 months we’ve been using it, Hubby has lost his ability to say he didn’t know about something. Oh, he knows!
Despite all this technology — I use my Mom Agenda also!
