the art cart needs a friend

This is Pea’s Art Cart.

It sees a lot of action in our house. Pea loves to create things. She’s constantly making collages or paintings to send to her grandparents. Or she’s creating something to hang in her sister’s room. She will sit for hours and hours in front of this thing. It’s all organized by craft materials, in each of four drawers. And I’m constantly adding to it, when I stumble across things while out and about. The top drawer contains things such as stickers, tiny seashells, pompoms, beads and other assorted doodads. The next drawer contains paper goods, such as Origami paper, drawing tablets, watercolor pads, little books with pictures in them that she uses in her collages, and glue: glue sticks, old-fashioned Elmer’s, glitter glue, a mini glue gun. And of course, we can’t forget the toddler safety scissors and the hole punchers in all kinds of fun shapes. And the next drawer holds crayons, markers, colored pencils. And the bottom drawer is any and everything related to painting.

But this past weekend? We tried something entirely new together. Sewing.

I found this cute little pattern on weewonderfuls.com and it was the perfect first sewing project for us to tackle together. It seemed easy enough and the directions were pretty detailed. So we took a trip out to Joann’s and she picked out fabric remnants and buttons and embroidery floss and stuffing.

Pea designed the little “doll” herself. She spent one whole hour choosing the fabrics. in the end, she went with a green theme. And then she chose the button for the nose and the googly eyes. She even stuffed it herself. All I did was sew it up for her.

And here she is… Introducing…

Zoe!

She’s pretty cute, right? Not bad for our first time out? Sure, she’s a little wonky, but she just oozes character.

Our next sewing project is planned for this weekend. Zoe needs a friend. His name is Daddy and he has to have arms and a Fedora hat and a mustache. Wish me luck. I think I might actually need to break out the sewing machine for this one…

I’m also going to need another Art Cart. Dedicated to sewing projects. Because I think this – sewing – is going to be our thing.

How cute! I love my art cart, it’s going to get new things today after a trip to Michaels. :) How fun that you and Pea have such fun projects, that doll is too adorable!

    Shannon,

My husband gave me a sewing machine a few years ago for my birthday. He also gave me 4 classes at the local sewing store. I went to 3 of the classes and learned the basics. And then, baby #2 came, and I forgot all about the sewing machine. But now that the girls are older, I’ve pulled it back out. It’s been staring at me for about a week now, and then I finally said, ‘I’m never going to get the hang of this unless I just DO it.” And so, that’s where I am. I’m not making anything very pretty right now. No gorgeous halter-top sundresses for the girls. My first project? A superhero cape for Pea. How hard can it be? Eventually, I’ll get up the nerve to try those little sundresses.

But I’ve seen the crafty things you do on your site! Something tells me that you and sewing would get along famously!

How did you learn to sew? Did you take a class or did someone teach you? I want to learn but am so intimidated by the whole idea…

Zoe is too cute. Love that art cart!

pretty effin impressive for a three year old – or a 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 year old for that matter.

That doll is absolutely adorable, I bet she’s going to want to make more and more. I stopped by weewonderfuls, what a cool blog, I had no idea that women were still actively sewing, how refreshing!

You’re right, you are going to need a new cart just for sewing. Have you tried sewing one of those dress patterns I saw over at wee? They look adorable.

BTW, this week I’m giving away a subscription to Budget Travel magazine as a further inspiration to The Grand Tour theme! Stop by and tell me where you want to go on your dream holiday.

Adorable! I can’t sew worth a damn. Oh well, I guess my Princess won’t be getting that skill from me! Can I send her to your house? *grin*

Zoe is adorable! What a cute craft to do with your girls. Sewing is not something we’ve ventured into yet. We have an art cupboard at our house that the kids can get into at anytime. We end up doing a lot of sculpting and painting mostly because of my husband’s work. I’m afraid if I had to help my girls make a Zoe it wouldn’t be nearly as cute ( :

When our school system was over crowded and we were out of rooms – our Art Teacher had to visit each classroom – we called it Art on a Cart. This gave me a chuckle and I never thought to do it at home – thanks!
