My husband left very early this morning for Beijing. As in China. For six weeks. He’s on his way over there for the Olympics. And it was a really tough goodbye. We didn’t have a lot of time to make the decision whether or not he should go, so I’m not sure how much thought we really put into it. But now, it’s too late. He’s off.

But not before leaving the girls with a fantastic going-away gift. He spent Friday afternoon building the girls a sandbox. On wheels. With a cover, and everything. And it’s gorgeous.

Pretty awesome gift, right? Here are the girls in action:

Coco isn’t so sure about it just yet. Sand between her toes is new to her. But Pea? It’s the first thing she wants to do in the morning, and the last thing she wants to do at night. Play in her sandbox. We had a barbecue on Saturday evening with a few families, and it was pretty popular with all of the kids, children of varying ages.

That green pail in the sandbox is a new one. It came with a small rake, shovel and mold for building the ultimate sand castle. Not only is the entire set made with plastic milk bottles that are picked up on trash day outside of people’s homes, but this thing is completely indestructible. The handle is sturdy rope, the plastic is thick and strong. And no primary colors! I’m delighted with the purchase. It’s the perfect accent to their very stylish little sandbox.

We miss Daddy, already. But this sandbox, which provides hours and hours of outside entertainment, is a constant reminder of how much he loves his little girls.

Thanks, Daddy. And safe travels…

wow – the olympics. how cool is that. i have no idea what he does but I am guessing he is not there to be an athlete? Can you fill me in on what he will do there? I know it will totally stink to be single mom for 6 weeks, but imagine all that hand made chinese stuff he will bring back. oh, thats right, they sell it at target. that is a really great sandbox!

Hopefully the next few weeks fly by. We will all be here with you (hanging on your every word).

And seriously, that picture of you and Pea that you just posted, priceless. Not only can the man earn a living and build swanky things for you but he takes a photo like that? He’s worth the wait!

    Hang in there.

Clearly you have a great husband and father and I know he will be missing you and the girls just as much as you will miss him.

And that sandbox is just a beautiful token of his love!

I think you are one of the smartest, bravest, chicest (like one of the girls said) and saintly (let us not forget that one) women I know. As always your the mom. And the hubby? He’s fantastic. The sandbox is a work of art. Beautifully joined together. Tell him I said so.

Safe travels to your husband. And what a seriously cool sandbox! I want one! I mean, please. :) Haha. I like that it’s on wheels, that has to be convenient. He could so sell those.

Your blog got me through eight weeks of my husband working nights, which meant we only got him for 1-2 hours a day. I think I was only on week two and feeling pretty hagard and lonely and couldn’t imagine making it the entire time without calling in reinforcements. But I found your blog. You seemed strong and confident, not to mention incredibly chic! I thought if you could do your schedule with style then surely I could do this with at least a good blow out. LOL

To make this long story short…Erin is right, if anyone can do it, you can…..with style.
