kid art

We’ve made working on the girls’ rooms a priority. I mentioned before that Pea had been having some ‘issues’ with the state of her room, which is actually quite lovely. Not, however, according to Her Highness. “My room is not pretty.” Every night. And her room is pretty. It’s just not hers; it was someone else’s. Well, maybe ‘pretty’ isn’t the right word. The room itself is blah. Bland. Builder beige. But the view? It is sweeping. And with two large picture windows overlooking the valley below, who the heck is looking at the walls?

Well, apparently Pea is. And so, project ‘Make Pea’s Room Pretty’ has commenced. And so while we are at it, we thought perhaps we should just bang out little Coco’s room, too.

And, so…

After having chosen the furniture, the fabrics for the windows, the floors, the rugs, the lamps… We needed art. My mother, an artist herself, has gifted both girls with magnificent artwork since before they were born. But we wanted to add to their collections. And art for a child’s room is tough. We are art collectors in our home, my husband and myself. It’s a passion, and aside from books, art is the one thing that I would spend my last dollar on. I can justify it. No problem.

But kid’s art? Precious. Pale. Predictable. And so very not timeless. I want the art that surrounds my daughters to travel with them. To be with them. For years. Decades. Generations. Passed on to their children. And later, their children’s children.

But in all honesty? I still wanted a little hint of childhood. Something evocative of the innocence, the newness, the excitement of being a child. For weeks, perhaps months, I dug around, looking, searching. Not committing. Until…

Mummy Sam.

I’d been watching her work for months. Her dolls are incredibly appealing to me. As are her pillows. How perfect would this one be, as a baby shower gift? But I was looking specifically for a piece to hang on Pea’s wall, at the foot of her bed. And I was seeing a lot of prints. I wanted an original. And then, one day, there it was. An original, in felt. Colors? Perfect. Not precious, at all. Rich, sophisticated, elegant. Subject? Not precious, at all. Three girls, holding hands. Longevity? Not precious, at all. This piece? It would grow with my little Sweet Pea. Had to have it. It fit all of the criteria.

Pleased to say I am delighted with the purchase. And still in wonderment over how the artist gets those amazing little stitches, so integral, on those tiny little pieces of felt. My only wish? Since I plan on matting and framing the piece? Is that there was some way to frame it so that the incredible fabric on the back of the piece would be visible. Seriously, the attention to detail in this little work of art is nothing short of phenomenal.

So, here is the piece. As a print. The artist did warn me that she would be taking photographs of the final piece to turn into prints. No big deal, in my book. We have an original masterpiece, in felt, that will be gazed upon for years to come.

And while you can’t buy the original, because I bought it, you can buy the print, which I am sure is equally as charming.
