love wood toys

I ordered a set of three ‘miniature’ cars by Automoblox about one month ago. I’d read so many glowing reviews of the larger ones, but didn’t want to spring for the $30 to $40 for one of those. But I could justify the $30 for a set of the three smaller ones. They are, after all, interchangeable with one another, and so in order to have that added benefit of creative engineering, I’d need to buy at least two of the larger ones. And honestly? If I wasn’t going to spend $30 to $40 for just one, I was certainly not going to spend up $80 for two. And the ‘minis?’ They’re actually not all that small, a pretty good size, really, but not for kids under three, as the pieces that are removable are really tiny.

So, the mini set it was. Good call. Pea loves these things. It’s so much fun to watch her manipulating the little parts of the three different automobiles, making interesting hybrid-looking cars from the parts. And then, she puts them back to their original configurations. And then she starts all over again. And then, she drives them through her dollhouse, hilariously laughing at “a car! In a house!”

In fact, she loves them so much that she asked me if we could send a set of them to her favorite cousin in Texas? Of course, I couldn’t say “no” to that. And he loves them, too. And he’s older than Pea, about 6. And we hear it’s his current favorite toy. And this kid? He has a lot of toys. Plastic, character-themed toys. And when I say a lot, I mean a lot. I did not think these little wood cars would go over well with him, but he’s caught the bug, too.

    Donna,

I don’t have a number for Lisa, but I know she’ll promptly answer your email, that’s how I’ve always communicated with her. I’m sure if you send her a quick note explaining your situation, she’ll get right back to you.

Those wooden cars just took me right back to my childhood…..so retro, so cool, and so much more fun than plastic!

Melissa, I’ve been meaning to tell you about a pizza place my husband and I used to go to in Utah. It may be a bit of a hike from where you live, though. But it was started by a couple from New York because they moved to Utah and couldn’t find any decent NY pizza. I have never been to NY, but it seems pretty authentic. It’s in Provo and it’s called Nina’s Original (NY Pizzeria and Juice Bar). We liked it; and maybe it is a place you could get your favorite New York slice!

Oh, maybe I should mention that it’s kind of a college kid hang out. Right near the university.

    Melissa,

I am trying to order a Lisa Leonard necklace as a shower gift AND I ended up ordering one for me( since today is my B’Day )!! I ordered the wrong chain for myself and I have a question about my gift order as well. I found no phone number on the website. I really want to speak with someone live. Do you know of a number?

    Thanks,

    Donna

I gave one of the large ones as a birthday gift to a 2 year old boy last year. I think they are so cool looking, and figured that it would work as room decor if the boy’s parents didn’t think he was ready for it just yet. It didn’t go over so well- it was the only wooden toy in a sea of plastic Thomas train stuff- his parents just thought I was being a weird hippie. I am so glad that there are others out there that appreciate wooden, well designed toys as I do! My daughter is going to get a set of the mini cars in her stocking this year.

I did it – I bought them for my son turning 4 in October. Couldn’t have been a better gift! Thank you! I’m having so much fun with your blog!

I just sent the link to my husband – suggesting a possible Christmas present for the little one. He wrote back that he would much rather find them under the tree with HIS name on the tag. :)

We love Automoblox at our house. I almost wish they made “real” cars too.

We got our at Landbridge Toys.
