My husband returned from a recent trip with 2 Groovy Girls. One for Pea and one for Coco. Both girls went nuts for them, and have since been carrying them around everywhere, referring to them as their “babies.”
Fast-forward about one week. We were at the local mom & pop toy store, where Pea was choosing a special treat. I love this store immensely, they just have the best selections of really cool toys: wooden toys, toys from other countries, classic children’s books, etc. And so I always know that we’re going to find something fantastic.
And then, Pea found her special treat. And I had to pick my jaw up off of the floor. And hold my tongue. It was one of those Bratz dolls. Now, Barbies I will tolerate. Disney Princesses? I will also tolerate. But the Bratz dolls? No. Not going to happen. First off, I can’t stand the name. Bratz? Ugh. And second of all, they look like teen-agers who need a little more parental supervision, to me. And a lot less make-up. And yet they are always on the lowest shelves, and seem to be geared towards much younger girls. Teen-agers, last I checked, do not play with dolls.
So I said, “no.” And that’s all I said, and steered her towards a much more appropriate area. And there, we hit the jack-pot. Lots of Groovy Girls, and outfits to go with them. Pea had a field-day picking out a new get-up for her girl, and I felt much better about the age-appropriate doll.
Plus, now that she has her Groovy Girl, the Polly Pockets have been put away. I’m hoping for good. Because if I’m asked one more time, while driving the car, to put a rubber dress on a tiny doll with hard plastic limbs, I’m going to throw it out the window. And that’s another benefit of Groovy Girls… they can be dressed, in all of the velcro glory, by a three-year old!

Melissa, thank you for a wonderful suggestion. As a mom of two little girls as well, finding toys/dolls/what have you that is “appropriate” is frustrating. After my SISTER of all people sent my 2 yr old for her birthday a Cabbage Patch doll that pees (!!!) I thought, “either I am a huge prude or something is wrong with toys these days.” So your posting on these Groovy Girls was exactly what I needed to see. Thank you!!
I like those dolls. I can’t stand Bratz, seriously. I can’t believe they’re allowed to market those things to kids. They’re slutty. I’m glad Pea likes her new “baby” and had fun getting new stuff for her.
FYI-Target carries them. Also, I saw them at Toysrus along with accessories.
Ohhhhhhhhhhh I just set Amazon.com on fire. I love those dolls! Cute, age appropriate, and so affordable! These will do nicely until my little girl is old enough for the American Girl cult.
I’m in total agreement with you on the Bratz dolls. Luckily, to date, neither of my girls have been remotely interested in them. However, my oldest (now 10) received one for a birthday gift when she was 6. I wasn’t crazy about it, but I believe in teaching my children to be gracious receivers and givers. Even if it’s a gift I don’t care for, I know that most gifts are given innocently and with love- and I want my children to always see the motivation behind something verses judging it. It’s worked for me to tell them why I might not support something, but then, step back and let them decide for themselves. More often than not they rise to the occasion and come to a similar decision on their own when I give them the space to do so.
Hi there…Just started reading your blog and LOVE IT!! Had to comment on this entry due to the fact that we have a TON of Groovy Girls at our house. My 4 year old adores them and the low maintenance? I adore that!
