Okay, Ann. This ones for you.
I can tell, within a few hours, that it’s going to snow, because my hair suddenly ’sticks’ to everything it passes. Walls. Sofas. You name it. It’s not a major problem, in the grand scheme of things, but it is a problem.
It only affects me in the winter. But here, it’s winter for the majority of the year.
I’ve tried, seriously, nearly every hair product out there. You name it, I’ve tried it.
And now that I’ve come to a point in my life where I am no longer trying to fight my hair, no longer trying to make it into something it’s not, I’ve released a lot of anxiety. And earned about 30 extra minutes of sleep.
I wash my hair every other day. And don’t say “eww.” Every hair stylist that I’ve ever had has recommended that to me. And now that I’m not mucking up my hair with too much product, this is a reality for me: my hair looks better for it. I have a really healthy head of hair. No split ends. Just lots of long and shiny hair. On the days that I wash it, I then blow-dry my fringe (a must), and put it up in a bun. It takes forever to dry, but when it does, I take out the bun, shake it out, and I have nice and bouncy waves. But that’s not all I do. I then put this Silk Therapy, by Biosilk in my hair, when it’s dry. It’s very light, a little goes a long way, and it doesn’t leave a heavy or greasy residue. What it does do is add a nice sheen to my hair, but it also seems to tame those annoying fly-aways.
It’s a winter staple for me, definitely. Second winter season, in fact, that I’ve used it. I don’t know if there’s something better out there, to tame the static. But for now, this will do. (And it smells good, to boot…) The bottle will last a very long time.
And if you’re looking for something a little more economical, I honestly think that the John Frieda line is incredible. The straightening serum is really unsurpassed. I use this one myself, even though I don’t straighten my hair. It helps with the frizzies, the static. But again, a little goes a long way. Otherwise you’ll be leaving wet spots on your sofa, your pillow, the window on the subway. You get the picture…

Oh, I’m with Jaina. I MUST wash my hair everyday. It is so greasy, but not on a day-to-day basis, only when I don’t wash it everyday.
And I’d love to try some of these products, but my hair is also very fine (and made worse by the fact that I had pretty traumatic surgery 11 months ago and as a result lost a lot of hair but thank GOD it is growing back – now I have all these baby hairs [think postpartum] all over my head), so once I find something that works, I have to stick with it.
Phew. Where’d THAT rant come from? Anyway…up to shower and wash my hair now! Thanks, Melissa. Your blog is my very favourite!
I’m jealous that you’re getting snow soon! Of course I’m about 5 miles from the beach at the moment, so I guess I can’t complain. I only wash my hair everyday because it gets too greasy otherwise and I CANNOT stand it if my hair is greasy. It’s like a subtle phobia or something.
Biosilk! yeah! Its one of the products I picked up and sat back down….product shopping today! Thank you thank you thank you!
Try Nanoworks shineluxe finishing hair polish by Pureology. It keeps those little fly-a-ways under control and smells so good. I know about the crazy weather out there and what it does to hair and skin. I lived there for sometime and have tryed everything! You don’t really understand the importance of good conditioning until you’ve lived west. MOP (Modern Organic Products) has a good conditioner that helps in the winter.
