A girlfriend of mine is having a baby the first week of May. It’s a girl. And as the mother of a 4-year old boy, I know she is thrilled beyond at the prospect of pink. Pink. Pink. Pink. And then some more pink. Who could resist?
I offered to host her baby shower. I love to entertain, and I think that new life should always be celebrated. Actually, there’s not much that shouldn’t be celebrated, in my book. I love parties! And as hers is coming up on us really quickly – we just decided on the first weekend in April – it occurs to me that I must kick my party planning into very high gear.
And so, with Pea finally back in school today, I started on my 3rd biggest project of the coming month. The 1st being taxes. No fun. The second being Coco’s 2nd birthday party. Think butterflies and a small dip into the ‘boho chic’ pool. The 3rd being, obviously, a shower to celebrate a new person joining us on terra firma!
So, this particular girlfriend has a very specific style. A sparkling clean home with furniture that is monochromatic and clean-lined. It’s modern, but not in a kooky way. It’s sophisticatedly sharp contemporary. That’s the best I can do to describe it. And since I’ll be hosting the party at her home, I want the shower to reflect her style, her taste.
I’m a decisive woman, by nature. I know what I like and I don’t think twice. But sometimes even I need another person to weigh in. And I’m hoping that person might be you. Let me know what you think? A quick comment on this post about the invitation that speaks to you? Because that invitation? It’s going to set the entire theme for this party. And they are two different, very different themes. And I have them mapped out already. But they are equally gorgeous and I am feeling tremendous guilt for the theme that I will leave behind. Get over it, right? I know. I know. But I am a perfectionist. As in Type A on Speed. It’s my demon.
Enough said…
Invitation 1: Sweet Chicks. A mama bird and her baby bird. Chocolate brown and pink. Delicious. Comes complete with a killer ‘nesting’ theme that has practically planned itself.
Invitation 2: Pinwheel Swirls. I don’t know what the heck it is about this particular invitation, but it just completely mesmerizes me. And the color scheme is insane. Pale pink, rich pink and orange. It doesn’t get much more perfect than that. And the killer theme for this one? Dots. Or circles, I should say. There’s just something about the shape that makes me think ‘sophisticated mod.’ And ‘circle of life’. I could so easily run with this one.

Oh I’m way late, but those are SOOOOO cute! I liked Sweet Chicks best I think though. I love brown and pink
So, Melissa which invitation did you go with?!
It certainly validates you having a difficult time deciding!
Melissa,
Was thinking about you when I bought a sleevless, knit (tuck-pleated at the neck and to-die-for cute) version of this dress (without the pink bands, so much more subtle) for Milla at Target yesterday. I am pairing it w/ charcoal grey knit pants (too cute!) Anyway, the swirls made me think of your baby shower invite option and I was wondering if you knew about Dwell Baby for Target. The decor stuff has been there for a while, but they just started doing the cutest infant clothing…very modern, but still sweet. Some of the newer spring girls stuff is a little off the mark (flower “corsage” a-la-Carrie-Bradshaw on a onesie is kinda goofy), but most of it is adorable. My other favorites for her right now are all by Dwell Baby for Target, like this outfit and this blanket.

I know! Can you imagine? Just a 1-vote difference? I’m placing my order today, I’ll let you know what I ultimately went with…
Definitely the “sweet chicks”….it’s clean but pretty and feminine. And plus, baby chicks, nests, nuturing little birdies so they can fly away on their own? It’s begging for a baby shower to go to…….
I definitely like the swirls – it’s fun and puts me in the spring mood. My daughters room is chocolate brown with pink accents, so I do love the chicks invite, but with the long winter, I’m sure all of your guests would enjoy a bright cheerful event. It’s clean and modern, but still fun at the same time.
I love the “sweet chicks!” Very cute and more baby showerish in my opinion. And the nesting theme, love it!
As a mom of three girls – two of whom are way over the top into pink/princess/girly – I’m always looking for ways to promote feminine without being too traditionally girly. For that reason, I’d go with the swirls.
I’m definitely a fan of the chicks, but I’m a huge fan of pink and brown.
I love the swirls! It’s full of color without being too much color. And if she’s super excited about having pink again in her life, she’ll love this one. Someone else commented about the pink and brown color theme being overdone and I agree.
This is my vote…only with a much better catch phrase

You’re right, you can’t go wrong with either. My vote is for the chicks. I love the whole nest/bird theme- I’m in love with the Dwell designs stuff at Target these days. If it’s showing up there, is it too mainstream for your taste? Yes, brown and pink are really popular right now, but for good reason- feminine yet fun, serene yet playful, clean but not cold. It gives you more of a theme to work from, whereas the other primarily gives you the color scheme, which is a great one. But you do have taxes and birthday party to work on too. : ) Good luck, and let us know what you pick!

Definitely the pink and orange swirls!! Also, on my monitor, the chicks invitation looks plum and pink, especially with the brown banner right above it to compare.
Pinwheels. Pinwheels. Pinwheels.
Different and fun. And modern!

Brown and pink has been so overdone….I’d go with the swirls
Definitely the Swirls. That’s what I would want. The chick thing is cute but cute can too quickly cross over into cutesy and that doesn’t sound like her thing.
They’re both very cute and though I love the Sweet Chicks style, the whole pink and brown theme is overrated. The pinwheels I like and seem to be more of her taste. You can definitely make the decor whimsical, and even use pinwheel lollipops to decorate centerpieces. I’m sure you already thought of that! Oh, and the cake…don’t even get me started on that. I’m sure she’ll love either one. Great choices!
I think the “Pin Wheel Swirls” reflect your friends taste a bit more then the “sweet chicks”, from how you describe her, anyway. The second invitation is chic, modern, with a twist of class. The first invitation is sweet, but the type of invitation that I am use to seeing for most baby showers. Good luck with your party planning, and invitation deciding.
Before I clicked I thought, dots, polka-dots..yes! My daughter’s wardrobe has a lot of dots, I adore them, and as a grown woman I can’t wear them so she is the beneficiary.
But the dots have a birthday theme sooo….I have to go with the SWEET CHICK! Because a ewborn girl is sweet, soft, pink, and a little chickadee. Hope that helps a bit, Melissa!
PS Missed reading your blog…
Both invitations are adorable, but I love the “Sweet Chicks” one. I love the brown and pink color combo and I think it screams little girl!
I love the colors (and the style) in the second one, but I think the first says “sweet baby girl” more.
Cute choices! Personally, I love the “Sweet Chicks” one…it says sweet, calm, ahhh..sort of like a baby shower is or should be. The second one is very whimsical, and my immediate thought was, “Oh, well, this one is how she will feel the first week after the baby comes!” haha. I am sure whatever you pick will be in very good taste and warmly received.
