How many of you have stories floating around – untold – in your head? Stories that you just know would translate beautifully to a children’s book? Or perhaps you see illustrations in your dreams at night, the kind that would captivate a kid’s imagination? Or, maybe you’re one of the lucky ones, and you see words and pictures?
And? No idea where to even begin, right? Honestly, I have a few stories of my own that I’d like to get onto paper. And I, too, have no clue how to make that happen.
Well, Little Airplane can help you navigate the world of children’s book publishing. Not familiar with Little Airplane? But let me guess, you do know “The Wonder Pets!,” right? I think you’d have to be living under a rock not to know that it’s one of the most adorable kid’s shows around these days. Seriously. I think the whole premise is too incredible for words. From the names to the voices to the stories. Even the theme song, which is in current rotation on Pea’s most-sung kid tunes playlist. It’s right up there with “Free to Be You and Me.” I’d say that “The Wonder Pets!” are in good company.
Anyway, Little Airplane Productions has a staff with bios to make any parent of a young kid swoon. “Sesame Street.” “The Wonder Pets!” “Little Bill.” We’re talking the real deal here. Impressive. And they are offering a writer’s workshop called “The Little Airplane Children’s Book Academy,” which will take place this spring. Next month, actually. May 30th to June 1st, in New York City.
Take a poke around their website. You’ll get a good feeling about them. I did. Instantly. And I have a hunch that if you have a children’s book skipping around in that noggin of yours, these are just the folks to teach you the tools that you’ll need to get that idea out of your head and onto paper. Paper with a binding. And illustrations. And your name on the front cover.
It was serendipitous, that I found out about the workshop. I would love to attend. Might even twist my husband’s arm a bit too hard to get him to agree to send me. Happy Mother’s Day to me? But seriously, this is an opportunity here. A golden one. Look into it. Think about it. Come on, how many times have you read a book to your kid and thought to yourself, “self? I could totally do this!”
All of the information you need is on the page I’ve linked to above. Let me know if you’re thinking about it, I’d love to know…
Happy writing!

What I think is that publishing industry is in suffering pretty bad from this economy and that with this workshop they can make a nice chunk of change….. You either have a talent or you don’t, you either have a great stories or you don’t. I would start writing, do my own research and take just it from there. I highly doubt that a workshop like that will land anyone a book deal. It will probably make you feel inspired and psyched about the process – but honestly I think it’s a ripoff.
Sounds like an interesting workshop. I hope you get to go!
Ooh, I’d love to- and I’m right here in NY until the end of June- but for that price I could spend the weekend in Bermuda. Hmmmmm………
What a great opportunity! I’ve always wanted to write a children’s book in Spanish. Just never knew how to start the process. I wish I could attend this, since I’m in NY but don’t think I can dish out that kind of money right now. Sucks!! Hey, but if you do come, we’ll have to make plans to meet. So go ahead and twist your hubby’s arm. You deserve this. And then you can tell me all about it
Yes, go! It sounds like a great launching pad to get you to put those stories on paper and then into publication!
