We are completely addicted to Studio Ghibli movies in our home. And yes, that means that we’ve finally moved on from the Disney princess overload that’d been going on for years.
It all started when the girls were at a friends house and watched “Kiki’s Delivery Service.” That quickly turned into a trip to our local grocery store’s Red Box to check out “Ponyo.” And after the girls watched that one two times during the course of one weekend, I knew we were onto something. We are now the proud owners of “My Neighbor Totoro” and the newest addition to what is officially our Studio Ghibli movie collection, “The Cat Returns.”
I can’t say that I ever found the appeal in purchasing movies. I’m not one for watching something more than once (barring anything, absolutely anything, with Katherine Hepburn in it). But these movies are amazing! The girls and I have so much fun curling up on the sofas with our Kettle Buffalo Bleu potato chips and watching these charming Japanese films. Highly recommended!

My favorite movie of all time is My Neighbor Totoro! Infinitely better than Disney
cute! I recently succumbed to the Princess and the Frog, from our library no less. But I’m intrigued by Ponyo….off to the red box, especially when Daddy will be out of town soon. Hope you’re doing well, Melissa! All the best on your marathon training! : )
Always a pleasure to see someone starting to really like Japanese cartoons (I grew up watching them)! H Miyazaki (and others) have been making fantastic movies AND SERIES for decades, but unfortunately only a few of these movies and series are available in North America.
I am sure my girls would love these movies (currently they have discovered Avatar, the Last Airbender and literally soak it in like nothing I have ever seen), and I am very ready to move on as well from some of the Disney Princess stuff as well.
Can’t wait to check these movies out! Thanks!
